William Edward Schwer, Ed. D., 86, of Quakertown, died Sat., May 11 in his home. He was the husband of Mary (Biehn) Schwer. With his wife, he is survived by daughters Holly Schwer, Quakertown and Dr. Sally Canning, Oak Park, IL, son-in-law Michael Canning, granddaughter Madeline Canning, sister Catharine Ann Toth, Missiouri, nieces & nephews. William was born in Jersey Shore, PA, to the late Jack and Marguerite (Crane) Schwer. Immediately following high school graduation in 1944, he enlisted in the US Navy serving during WW II as a sonar man on a destroyer escort in both the Atlantic & Pacific theaters. He had a BS from Lock Haven University, a MA from Lehigh University, and a doctorate in education from Nova Southeastern University. Schwer's career as an educator began in the Quakertown schools, first as a sixth-grade teacher and then as assistant principal of the junior high school. In 1964, he was appointed to be the first principal of Pennridge's, then Central Junior High School. He eventually moved up into central administration as assistant to the superintendent for Administration & Management, retiring in 1988. He served as president of the Bucks County Assoc. of Secondary Curriculum Development in 1972-73. A former Quakertown Borough councilman, Schwer served as president from 1972 -75, during which time the present Borough Hall was built. He was a member of the Quakertown United Methodist Church and the Wallace Willard Keller American Legion Post 242. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held 11:30 am, Wed. May 15 in the Quakertown United Methodist Church, 1875 Freier Rd., Quakertown. Family and friends are invited to call in the church 10:30 - 11:30 AM. A fellowship luncheon will follow the service in the church's Miller Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to QUMC, 1875 Freier Rd., Quakertown, PA 18951.
