William E. Garber, 59, of Zionsville, died Wed., Aug. 8 in Lehigh Valley Hospice, Allentown. Born in Philadelphia he was a son of the late Ralph and Mary (Frederick) Garber. A graduate of Drexel University with a degree in chemical engineering, he became employed with Air Products & Chemicals, working 35 years at the Trexlertown office. Bill's assignments were in engineering, operations and information systems. He was a pioneer inside Air Products in the use of supervisory computers for the control and optimization of chemical & industrial gases in manufacturing plants. He was involved in the earliest deployments of plant computers and worked in all of Air Products business units, developed a wide understanding of Air Products operating facilities. His final assignment was in the Operations division supporting advanced controls using model predictive control. He had a deep knowledge of Air Products cryogenic air separation, hydrogen and carbon monoxide, liquid hydrogen and helium, and polyurethane intermediates operating units. Bill traveled extensively in North America and internationally visiting both Air Products and customer facilities. Bill was always willing to pick up the phone day or night to support the operating teams and was a mentor and role model to many junior engineers as they entered the company. Bill was active for over 50 years with the Boy Scouts of America, begi,nning as a Cub Scout and in 1977 becoming the Scout Master for Troop 431, Trexler District, Minsi Trail Council promoting and supporting special events & activities. He was a presenter at District Round Tables, a Merit Badge Counselor, and was a resource for advice to other District Troops. His Troop 431, served as a model of how to do scouting and has thrived and prospered in his 35 years of leadership. More than 300 young men have passed through Troop 431, with 62 becoming Eagle Scouts. Participants annually looked forward to the high adventure programs Bill planned for them. Surviving: sister, Karen and husband Glenn Ziegler of Quakertown. Funeral Services, including the Boy Scouts Ceremony, will be held Wed. Aug. 15, 8 pm, in the Jeffrey A. Naugle Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 W. Pumping Station Rd., Quakertown. www.janauglefcs.com Scouts, family, & friends are invited to call Wed. Aug 15, 6-8pm in the funeral home.
