Robert B. Helverson, Sr., 70, of Haycock Twp., died Sunday, Sept. 27th at Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He was the loving husband of Linda (Martin) Helverson for 47 years. Born in East Rockhill Twp., he was a son of the late Clifford and Ruth (Hager) Helverson. He was a factory worker at Freed's Glass Factory for 25 years, and a clerk at Genuardi's Grocery for 15 years. He was a family man deeply involved with his children. It was well known that he did not like watching sports, and he much preferred a beautiful summer day to a cold winter evening, and yet he would be certain to attend every high school football game where three of the four children marched with the band at halftime. He and his wife loved to be around for the children so they would work separate shifts to be home and care for their growing family. It was a "happy accident" that he needed to cook meals and bake for the family as he showed skill in that task and took pleasure in making the "worlds largest cookies ever!" He loved family gatherings where the horseshoes and Quoits would come out with the old hand crank ice cream maker where he would have a line of kids jumping at the opportunity to have a turn. He loved working on cars, taking long drives, working on the garden, and mowing the lawn especially when his kids or grandkids got involved. While he was the custodian at Salem Mennonite Church, he served in a much greater role in that he was a constant, reliable and welcoming presence for anyone coming to visit, and all activities being held. Surviving with his wife are sons, Robert, Jr. and wife Rachel, of Richlandtown, Doug of Quakertown, and Chris and wife Rhonda of Quakertown; daughter Malinda and husband Mark of Quakertown; grandchildren Jonah Scott, Renee Elizabeth, Elisha Louis, and Isabella Rose; brothers Arnie and wife Constance of Quakertown, Ronald and wife Carrie of Georgia; and Neil and wife Sharon of Quakertown; sisters Leenie Fitzgerald and husband Henry of Quakertown, Eleanor Saborsky of Quakertown, Wanda Beer and husband Jeff of Coopersburg, Donna Peters and husband Dennis of Quakertown, Connie Pompei and husband Randal of East Greenville, and Wendy Helverson and Brian Daniels of Coopersburg; father-in-law Harold Martin of Quakertown; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews. He is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ellianna Joy. A celebration of life will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 10th at Salem Mennonite Church, 41 E. Cherry Rd., Quakertown. A calling hour will precede the service from 1:00-2:00 PM at the church. Interment will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 3rd, at Quakertown Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial contributions to Salem Mennonite Church, 41 E. Cherry Rd., Quakertown, PA 18951. To help the family remember Bob's life, feel free to bring a copy of a photo that they can keep along with any stories or memories you would like to share. Bob was a "come as you are" kind of guy, so we are asking that as you share in these services, you come as you are. The family will be dressed in casual/picnic type attire and you are free to join us in that as well.
