Margaret Pennewell

Margaret L. Pennewell, 89, formerly of Coopersburg, died peacefully at her home in Glen Mills, PA on July 22nd. She was the wife of the late Frederick Pennewell. A first generation American, Margaret was born to Sophie and Theodore Laukemann in 1926 in Johnstown, PA. She lived with her parents in Dillsburg, and after graduating from Northern High, moved to Hanover at the age of 17. It was there she started working as a florist. She met Fred Pennewell and they were married in Baltimore, MD in 1949. Margaret and Fred moved to Coopersburg, PA and started Pennewell's Flowers in a small shop in their home on John Alley and opened their store on Route 309 in 1963. They raised three children and happily managed a successful flower business and greenhouses for 50 years. They enjoyed entertaining friends and family at their home and their yearly cruises. Margaret was active in the Altrusa Club, held various positions in the local chapter of FTD and Lehigh Valley Florists Association. She started the Countryside Garden Club in the southern Lehigh region and became the first president. At the age of 75, Margaret re-opened her flower shop under the name of Margaret's Garden, which she operated for another 5 years and retired again at age 80. She was never happier than when she was arranging flowers. Margaret is survived by her three children, Frederick and Hannah, both of Coopersburg, Pamela, husband Dave of Glen Mills; grandchildren, Ruth, Kelsey and Noah; great-granddaughter, Grace; sister, Hilda Hughes of Elizabethtown; brother, George Laukemann, wife Gloria of Apopka FL; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her eldest brother, Frederick Laukemann and her younger brother, Theodore Laukemann Jr. Services will be held 11:00 AM Wed. July 29th at Jeffrey A. Naugle Funeral & Cremation Service, 135 W. Pumping Station Rd., Quakertown. A calling will precede the service from 9:30-11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment in Woodland Cemetery, Coopersburg.
