GRETA E. (RICE) SCHISSLER Greta died Sept. 28, 2009 after a confinement of 49 days in the Hospice facility of Abington Memorial Hospital - another fatality of cancer. Greta, a 63 years wife (partner) of husband Mel have been residents of Earlington, PA for 50 plus years. Their family of Jeffrey, Karen and Margo spent their formative years there. Jeff died at age 42 in New York City; Margo died at age 48 in Grand View Hospital; Karen survives an aneurism and celebrated 35 years of marriage to Michael Golya (both teaching graduates of East Stroudsburg U.) their daughter Kara graduated (with honors) from the University of Pittsburgh in 2008. Greta is an R.N. graduate of Abington Memorial Hospital, and spent considerable of her employment in that profession while doubling with the profession of Motherhood. In addition, and aside, from her devotion to her family, she was a constant volunteer of considerable note; with youth at church, in scouting, as a school nurse and was an involved parent in significant aspects of the Souderton Summer Swim League. A notable community contribution was her involvement as one of the founding initiators of the Indian Valley Meals on Wheels program, and furthered her involvement as a coordinator and deliverer of meals. Her church volunteer services are multitude, as well as a family history exceeding 50 years at Little Zion Lutheran Church. She was an avid bird watcher; a staunch protector of animals (numerous family pets), an advocate of environmental concern and a plant, flower and gardener-almost solely responsible for the conversion of their property to a bird sanctuary and prominent flower expanse. Greta, the only child of Alverda and Preston Rice leaves as her survivors; Mel, husband; daughter, Karen wife of Michael of Mt. Cobb, PA; granddaughter Kara, currently residing in Pittsburgh, PA and granddaughter, Sabrina Summers, daughter of Margo, who resides with her father in New Jersey. Memorial Services will be held 11:00 am Monday, October 5th in Little Zion Lutheran Church, Bergey and Morwood Rds., Franconia Twp., PA
