Dr. Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer, resident of Lewisbery, previously of Boca Raton, Florida and Harrisburg passed away Oct. 17, 2012. She was born March 1, 1911, in Tamaqua Pennsylvania. She received her degree of B. FA in design at Syracuse University, MA from Pennsylvania State University from the School of Architecture. Graduate work studies were at Lebanon Valley College, University of Pennsylvania, University of Mexico, DF and University of Borgata Columbia South America. Mrs. Shaffer taught art in the High Schools of Harrisburg. She has long been active in Republican politics in Pennsylvania and Florida. She was president of the William Penn Memorial Museum Associates, member of Dauphin County Lawyers Wives, President Syracuse Alumni Association of Pennsylvania Central Chapter for 7 terms, Vice President of Board of Trustees of Shippensburg State University, Trustee of Messiah College and Syracuse University. She served 12 years on Executive Board of Trustees of Syracuse. She was awarded their Outstanding Alumni Honors in 1979. In 1990 she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts Degree and in October of 1990 they dedicated New Syracuse Art Building in her name. She served as honorary Trustee for both Messiah College and Syracuse at time of her death. She was a life member of the Royal Society of Art, London, England. She is preceded in death by husband, Maurice E. Shaffer Esq., and brother, Kenneth Ilgen. Burial will be in the Adams Family Graveyard at Durham Cemetery. Graveside service will be Mon Oct. 22 at 2pm. Jeffrey A. Naugle Funeral & Cremation Service 135 W. Pumping Station Road, Quakertown PA, is handling arrangements.
