Doris Naomi (Smith) Hieter, known to many as Mimi, age 90, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at Phoebe Richland Healthcare Center, Richlandtown, PA. The eldest daughter, born on May 17, 1930, in Quakertown, PA, to the late Allen H. and Edna Schoch Smith, and the loving wife of Harold C. Hieter. Doris met the man, who would become "the love of her life" while on the choir and in catechetical class, at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Spinnerstown. This man, Harold, would invite her to his ROTC dance, at Drexel University, and the rest was history as he recalls. She and Harold began their life together on a Saturday evening, March 10, 1951, in a candlelight wedding, at St. John's. As the wedding ceremony closed, it began to snow. They drove through the snowy night to Philly, to begin their honeymoon, arriving at the Ben Franklin Hotel. The next day, they traveled to Washington DC. Due to the snow, their scenic tour along Sky Line Drive was cancelled, since it was snowed shut. They had to travel west, of the scenic route, to get to Luray Caverns in Virginia. The trip continued, on to Williamsburg, then homeward to Gettysburg. This was a welcome getaway from Harold's family farm life commitments. Their love story continued on for 69 years. Doris was a graduate of Quakertown High School, Class of 1948 majoring in business. She began her career as a teller at Merchant National Bank, and later at the Provident Bank in Quakertown. From there, she would be a computer aide working at Richland Elementary School. Her connections with schools continued as she was the secretary to several high school principles at Quakertown. She would later become the library secretary, at that high school, up to her retirement. Doris had a gentle and kind heart always thinking of others and making them feel at home. As a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pennsburg, she became a Sunday school teacher, for the younger age groups, and a member of the ELCA. She also dedicated time knitting prayer shawls for the ill parishioners. Doris and Harold shared countless hours baking cookies, for the church's Mrs. Claus Kitchen, after the downtown Santa parade. The second love of her life arrived when her granddaughter, Megan, was born. The role of Mimi now consumed her. Throughout her life, Doris's passions laid in her numerous hours of crafting. There wasn't a craft she didn't like or experiment trying. From quilting, knitting, crocheting, and painting, she was always busy creating and selling her wares. Her love of crafts surely inspired her daughter and granddaughter, as they spent much time crafting along with her. Much of their weekends were spent enjoying time traveling to guild craft shows. Doris was an avid gardener, always out in her flower beds until the sunset, often winning her title of "Grub Worm." As a member of the American Iris Society, the family would travel to various members' gardens and arboretums. Although she adored all animals, especially her grand-dogs, her detest for mice was evident. You could often find her making a distinct disgusted face at fake ones. Her family enjoyed tormenting her with these. Her sense of humor was exhibited, when she worked several years, at her family's primitive store. She got several "pink slips," from her late son-in-law, as she helped price and display products. "Fa La Fa La, Mimi, Fa La Fa La" - known to others as "Fa La La La La." This was one of the many funny quirks common, to a long day of working, with family. Mimi's warm smile and love, for family, will be sorely missed. Her long life, of cherished memories, will continue to be held ever so close in our hearts. In addition to her husband, Doris is survived by: daughter Susan Gross; son David Hieter, granddaughter Megan Gross Sauter, husband Andy, grand-dog Jacqi; brothers Robert Smith, wife Lorna, Ronald Smith, wife Joan; and sisters Betty Bright, husband Donald, and Lucille Hance, husband Donald Gehman, and sister-in-law Stella Smith. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in passing by sister Ellen Smith, brother Allen Smith; and son-in-law James Gross. Services: Naugle Funeral and Cremation Service 135 W.
