Chao-Kuang Hsu, age 79, passed away at his family farm in Richlandtown, on Jan. 11, 2019. He was born on Aug. 12, 1939, in Pingdong, Taiwan, to the late Tian Tsai and Shang Mei (Cho) Hsu, and was the loving husband of Susan (Hu) Hsu. C.K., as his friends called him, lived the American dream. Emigrating to the US from Taiwan in 1965, he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne in addition to the DVM he had earned at National Taiwan University before coming to the US. He further earned his Master's Degree in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Medical School. He worked in Academia at Johns Hopkins Medical School, Georgetown Medical School, Frederick Cancer Research Institute, and the University of Maryland Medical School. After Academia, he transitioned to private industry where he was Director of Lab Animal Resources at Merck and SmithKline. In the early 1980's, he was one of the few American scientists invited to China to initiate scientific exchanges. He started his own company afterwards and was a pioneer in fostering exchanges between the Chinese and American scientific community. He is often referred to as the "Father of Chinese Laboratory Animal Medicine" in China and he received the highest award given to a non-Chinese citizen for his lifelong achievements and contribution to the field of Lab Animal Medicine. CK loved to play tennis, sing, play the flute and grow Chinese peonies. He created the largest Chinese peony garden outside of China at his family farm. Every Spring, he opened his garden to the public. He was an avid collector of Chinese porcelain and art. In addition to his loving wife, Chao-Kuang was the loving father to Michael Hsu (wife Jennifer), and Victor Hsu (wife Elizabeth); and was a devoted grandfather to Victoria, Jacob, Abigail, Elissa, Anderson, and Benjamin. He is survived by 6 beloved brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. Service details are forthcoming.
