Alice McLaughlin Sullivan, 92, wife of the late Timothy F. X. Sullivan, CPA, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 21, 2010. Alice, lovingly called "Muzz", lived in Quakertown, PA before moving to a retirement community in Severna Park, MD in 2007. Muzz was a great teacher in and out of the classroom, loved writing, reading, photography, gardening, birds, playing the piano and singing along with Dean Martin and Bing Crosby. She passed these loves onto her children and grandchildren. Born July 4, 1918 in Catasauqua, PA, Alice graduated from St. Lawrence School and Catasauqua High where she was an honor student and worked on the school newspaper. Alice received a Senatorial Scholarship and graduated with honors from the School of Journalism, Pennsylvania State College, University Park, PA in 1940. Throughout her life, she was an avid Nittany Lions fan. In 1941, Alice married James N. Johnston and worked in Philadelphia to support her three daughters while her husband served overseas in WWII. After his death in 1947, she married Timothy F. X. Sullivan in 1948. Living in Green Lane (5 yrs), Coopersburg (12 yrs), then Quakertown, PA (40+ yrs), Alice raised seven children. She volunteered at the Sacred Heart Home, St. Isidore's School and Quakertown Library, was a frequent contributor to the Quakertown Free Press and active in the American Heart Association. The Allentown Morning Call published an article she wrote about going to see Lawrence Welk (her absolutely favorite entertainer) at the Allentown Fair. Muzz cherished the 44 summers her family spent at their summer home in Longport, NJ. She especially enjoyed the beach, sunsets from her porch and celebrating her July 4th birthday surrounded by family and friends. Muzz will be greatly missed by her children and their spouses: Elizabeth Lawrence & Bernard Prober, Mary & Peter Esseff, Alice & Richard Findlay, Michael & Margie Sullivan, Timothy & Anne Marie Sullivan, Gerald & Dotty Sullivan, and Maggie & Shawn Sweeney; 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will hold a Celebration of Alice's Life in Quakertown Saturday, January 8, 2011 at St. Isidore's Church, 2545 W. Pumping Station Road: Visitation 10:00-11:00 A.M., Mass at 11:00 A.M. and Internment followed by a reception at the Brick Tavern. To celebrate the joy Muzz brought into their lives, her family plan to wear festive (not black) clothing and invite others to do so also. Arrangements are being made through Jeffrey A. Naugle Funeral & Cremation Services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the "Alice M. & Timothy F. X. Sullivan Memorial Scholarship Fund", St. Isidore's School, 603 W. Broad St. Quakertown, PA 18951.
